Slow down and drive with care when approaching a “cone zone”.
Behind every work zone cone is a worker in a vulnerable position. Each cone stands for someone’s father, mother, son, or daughter.
SLOW DOWN and drive with care when approaching a “Cone Zone”.
- municipal workers

- flag people
- tow truck drivers
- road construction
- and maintenance workers
- telecommunications and utility workers,
- and emergency and enforcement personnel
The Cone Zone = Slow Down campaign is a joint provincial initiative supported by organizations committed to improving the safety of roadside workers. The objective of this campaign is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries of roadside workers by increasing awareness of the vulnerability of workers working at the side of the road and encouraging drivers to practice safe driving behaviour in the Cone Zone.

Here’s what you can do to drive safely in the cone zone:
SLOW DOWN
- 1. Plan your route and allow extra travel time.
- 2. Expect the unexpected and don’t tailgate.
- 3. Slow down to posted speedlimits and pay attention.
- 4. Allow ample space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
STAY ALERT AND MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS
1. Keep your eyes on the road.
2. Never use a cell phone or text while driving.
3. Follow sign/flag directions.
4. Get to know the work zone signs.
SHOW RESPECT FOR THE PERSON WORKING AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD
1. Make eye contact.
2. Keep your cool and be patient.
3. Slow down even if you don’t see anyone working. Physical hazards such as traffic shifts or lane reductions may be present.
