With the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics fast approaching, many residents of Vancouver wait patiently for the increase in traffic volume that will accompany the event. For a sporting chance of getting around the area during the Olympics, VANOC, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and other transportation partners have launched the website www.travelsmart2010.ca in an effort to coach the public in becoming lean, agile commuters. For their rigorous program of educating and training the motoring public, these transportation partners deserve a gold medal for their efforts!

“driving home” winter safety awareness

January 19th, 2010 Comments off

During a two week period in December, Mainroad South Island coordinated a winter awareness roadside vehicle inspection campaign.  Thanks to the efforts of our friends in the R.C.M.P. and the C.V.S.E., checks were done on the TransCanada Highway, both north and south bound, on either side of the Malahat.  The purpose was to make drivers aware of the necessity of having good winter tires, carrying chains, and using safe driving habits.

Mainroad provided and handed out over 800 winter awareness pamphlets.  The R.C.M.P. was responsible for checking private vehicles and the C.V.S.E. looked after the commercial inspections.  The public was very receptive to our combined efforts and the R.C.M.P. and C.V.S.E. found the majority of vehicles in compliance with winter regulations.

I would like to thank all those involved and look forward to another successful winter safety awareness campaign next year.
